Crack in Space VR

This is the journey of a man stuck inside his head. He is trying to rebuild his consciousness fragments by fragments through revisiting his altered memories.

 

For him, rebuilding the world was as accurate as reconstructing his consciousness. He can visit these worlds that he has unknowingly created by merging his memories with his imagination.

 

Fixing them would eventually improve his perception of life and restore his consciousness.

Eliminating the use of Controller

Hand Gestures

Navigation and interaction with hand gestures made the Experience much more immersive without the need to hold the controllers.

Floating : Use superman pose to fly and navigate around.

Use your head movement to give direction.

Turning : Twist your fists to rotate in that direction

Sky Manipulation : Freeze your left hand pose and slowly make a rainbow gesture with your right hand to manipulate the sky.

Scene Progression

As Ben (the main character) completes the Quests, he discovers the building blocks of life. These building blocks help him restore the main world. Every time he returns to his world, he finds some positive changes.

How to Guide player when the player has 360 of freedom and Open world?

Hospital Layout

As the Ben (main character) completes the Quests he discovers building blocks of life. This building blocks helps him restore the main world. Every time he comes back to his world he finds some positive changes.

When player exit from the room, his vision is obstructed from the tree (left side). It was a conscious decision to influence player to  turn right.

During playtesting, 90% of the player turns right side.

Platform Light beam

Main Worlds are open to explore for the player. In main world there is always a light beam (Blue color) present to direct player towards the platform when he wanders too far.

Composition of Quest 1

In Quest 1: Orientation of floating islands and objects around the tree is as such that it motivates player to move towards the Tree.

Design of the Platform

The player needs to reach the platform and look in the right direction while manipulating the sky to avoid unnecessary hindrance in aligning the cracks.

A podium is added opposite the stairs, showing the shape of an aligned crack.

Freezing the rotation and movement of the player can further the ease of Sky manipulation.

The player is guided towards the platform through a path clear of grass.

● Object shuffle mechanics is manipulating the stages of highlighted objects through time.

● We use these mechanics to trigger the character's memories and unravel the story.

Quest 2 : Underwater World

● Quest II follows a traumatic childhood memory of the main character.

 

● A story-based puzzle level, where the player has to search for glowing things to interact with.

 

● Player must achieve the correct objects' stages to unravel the narrative.

 

●Player also has to explore and find the correct sequence of the objects.

Dealing with Motion Sickness in VR

Minimize Motion Sickness

● Took few notes from the GDC session about minimizing VR sickness.

● Replicating any familiar real life movement like walking in VR can make fall in the uncanny valley.

Slow movements can reduce the nausea and unease.

● Mechanics like Teleporting or floating are recommended over normal walking & running.

●Managing area of focus by adding frame, window or crosshair in Player’s peripheral vision reduces VR sickness.
